Urban Nocturnes presents an evening of chamber music with piano and strings, as violinist Karen Sinclair and violist Christopher McKay join with cellist Melita Hunsinger and pianist Olga Gorelik. The concert features works of Claude Debussy, York Bowen, and Gabriel  Fauré. Tickets $15.00, available online or at the door. Free parking. A free reception follows the concert.

Choral evensong is the evening service of the Anglican Church and the choir sings much of the service by itself. There has been a tradition of choral singing at York Minster, in England, for a millennium or more. A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmastide

This beloved Christmastide service and standing-room-only Trinity Cathedral tradition began in 1918 at King’s College, Cambridge. Nine lessons are read by young and old alike, and the congregation and community are interwoven through the singing of carols by both choir and congregation. Featured works by Bednall, Darke, Chilcote, Willcox and others. One of America’s leading concert organists, David Higgs is also Chair of the Organ Department at the Eastman School of Music. He performs extensively throughout the United States and abroad.  He was appointed to the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music upon graduation from that institution, and has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music since 1992 where he recently received the Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching. The second Choral Evensong is offered during the penitential season of Lent. Music for this service includes the Second Service of Orlando Gibbons, organist to the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey, and the Preces and Responses of William Smith, a minor canon at Durham Cathedral in the early 17th century and a near contemporary of Gibbons. The anthem will be “It is a Thing Most Wonderful,” written by Philip Moore for Wakefield Cathedral in 1989.

In February, 1931, French organist and composer Marcel Dupré was asked to improvise between the reading of 14 poems entitled Le Chemin de la Croix, written in 1911 by Paul Claudel. Because of its overwhelmingly positive reception, Dupré recalled and wrote down his improvisations during the course of the following year. For their final concert of the season, Urban Nocturnes returns in string trio format for a concert of music for violin and viola. Chiefly focusing on works from Eastern Europe, the program will consist of Zoltan Kodaly’s Trio (Hungary), Prokofiev’s Duo for Two Violins (Soviet Union), Dvorak’s Terzetto (Czechoslovakia) and “Le Londres” Trio by the French composer Eugene Ysaÿe. Choral Evensong – Easter IV

The final Choral Evensong is offered during the season of Easter and will feature works of twentieth century English composers. The canticle setting will be the “St. Paul’s Service” of Herbert Howells, written for the St. Pauls Cathedral (London) in 1951. The setting of the Preces and Responses is by Henry Clucus, written for the choir of King’s College Cambridge in 1964. Edgar Bainton’s most notable work, And I saw a New Heaven, rounds out the service music offerings.
